It is funny, when you think of the stereotypical fighter you don’t think of people with high intelligence. Fighters are thought of as crazy, deranged, psychopaths, who like pain. While that may describe a few of us, it is not a fair or accurate description. The truth is fighters are some of the most brilliant people. They understand strategy, they see small flaws and know how to exploit them, they are pastors, lawyers, and doctors.
I was impressed when my pastor, who trains the rest of us garage faithful fighters, came up with this analogy. He said our combinations, thats fighter speak for multiple strike combinations, are analogous to vocabulary words. We learn vocabulary and then include them into our speech, in the same way we learn combinations and include them in our fight plan. We must learn to use them correctly or we end up sounding stupid, or in fight terms we end up getting knocked out. So in the same way I am trying to learn more legalese and include them appropriately into my speech and prepare for another bar exam, I am learning new combinations that I can include into my repertoire of fight skills and can include them into whatever my next “challenge” may be.
So the next time you watch a fight and think man that guy is dumb, remember he or she may have the next great idea, or cure for cancer, or write a supreme court brief that just may change the world.
